The story begins with Japan being eliminated from the FIFA world cup in 2018.The Japanese Football Union starts a program to scout for talented high school players who will train in preparation for the next big cup in 2022.

 The main character Isagi Yoichi a forward, receives an invitation to this program soon after his team loses their chance to go to the Nationals.The invitation was sent because Isagi passed to his less-skilled teammate who missed when he could have made the game winning goal by himself.

 The team has a coach by the name of Ego Jinpachi, who wants to introduce a radical and controversial training regimen whereby they isolate 300 young forwards in a prison setting called "Blue Lock" and the training is rigorous but named at creating "The worlds greatest egotist striker."
